Woad, pirates and rainbows

Today we tried again to dye with woad and this time it worked! Dyeing with woad is a very interesting process, a bit alchemisty.

First we mixed the woad with hot water and salts.

Gently layed the piece of fabric into the dyebath and keep it there for at least 10 minutes depending on how intensive you wish the cloration.

It turned a yellowy-browny-greeny.

Bis die Farbe geblich-bräunlich-grünlich wurde.

Once taken out and air can get onto the fabric it turns rather rapidly into a very nice blue.

While our blue cloths dried we went to a pirate fete in Wells. Some pirates were dressed up like real pirates of the 17th and 18th century and demonstrated combats, canons and told us about the way of life of pirates.

We also saw some dances.

Wir haben auch Tänze gesehen.

And after a shower...

Und nach einem Wolkenbruch…

... a marvellous rainbow.

… gab es einen wunderschönen Regenbogen.
