Reading challenge

Today was an official celebration for the reading challenge. All of our children read their 6 books and more and got their medals and certificates together with other children. Even the county councellor came for the celebration and we could talk to her and ask her question about the job of a county councellor. The photographer of the local newspaper was at the celebration too. It was a very nice official ending of the reading challenge.

Heute war die offizielle Preisverleihung fuer die Leseherausforderung. Alle unsere Kinder haben ihre 6 Buecher und mehr gelesen und haben ihre Medaille und Urkunde erhalten. Die "County Councellor" war sogar hier und wir konnten ihr Fragen ueber die Arbeit eines County Councellors stellen. Der County Council, eine Verwaltungsbehoerde fuer einen ganzen County kuemmert sich um alles von Strassen, ueber Schulen, Bibliotheken, Bevoelkerung, etc. Der Fotograf der lokalen Zeitung war ebenfalls anwesend. Es war eine schoene kleine Ehrungsfeier.

After the reading challenge ceremony we went to see the Maltings in Wells. This week-end is “Heritage Open Days”. So there are many historical buildings, like the maltings, to see. They stopped producing malt to make beer around 1930 and project to re-open the building for a museum. There was barley to see and touch and some artefacts of the malt producing days. And the building itself was very interesting as it has a visible roof from the inside, which most buildings here don’t have.


We then started a treasure trail through Wells. The children have to find different pictures hidden throughout the little town of Wells reading clues.

Our next stop was at Binham Priory. The Priory dates back to the Middle Ages. Beautiful panels – you’ll see some below - explain the life of the monks in medieval times. Perfect for homeschoolers that are in the middle of the study of Middle Ages.



Nach der Leseherausforderungszeremonie haben wir uns die alte Mälzerei in Wells angesehen. Dieses Wochenende ist „Heritage Open Days“, das heisst viele historische Gebäude, wie die Mälzerei, öffnen ihre Türen. 1930 haben sie mit der Malzproduktion aufgehört, planen nun aber das Gebäude wieder zu eröffnen und ein Museum daraus zu machen. Wir konnten Gerste sehen und anfassen und auch einige Ausstellungsstücke aus der Malzproduktionszeit. Auch das Gebäude selbst ist sehenswert, besonders da die Dachbalken zu sehen sind, was die meisten Gebäude hier nicht haben.


Danach haben wir eine Schatzsuche durch Wells begonnen. Die Kinder müssen bestimmte Bilder, die im ganzen Städtchen versteckt sind, finden indem sie Hinweise lesen und entschlüsseln.


Unser nächster Stopp war in der Binham Abtei. Die Abtei stammt aus dem Mittelalter. Sehr schöne Tafeln erklären auf anschaulicher Weise das Leben der Mönche im Mittelalter. Perfekt für Homeschooler, die sich gerade mitten im Mittelalterstudium befinden.
