Admiral Lord Nelson

We went to see Admiral Lord Nelson’s birth village. On the way we stopped at Crabbe’s Castle, the site of an old castle, we saw on the map. But there was nothing left to see. Therefore we just had a look at the site and together we thought a bit why a castle could have been build at this place. We then drove further to Burnham Thorpe, where Nelson was born in 1758. Together we read a booklet I had previously bought and learned a lot about Nelson, why he became a National hero, his three major battles - the battle of the Nile, of Denmark and of Trafalgar - and of course about the history of his time. We had a look at where his birth house had been - it was demolished in 1803 - at the church where his father was rector and Horatio Nelson was baptized and also at the pub where he gave a farewell party. In the church where also information about him as well as a leaflet “The Nelson Trail”, a walk around Burnham Thorpe again with lots of info.


Wir haben uns das Geburtsdorf von Admiral Lord Nelson angeschaut. Auf dem Weg dorthin haben wir bei der Crabbe Burg angehalten. Wir hatten sie auf unserer Karte entdeckt. Leider war überhaupt nichts mehr zu sehen. Darum haben wir einfach gemeinsam überlegt warum gerade an dieser Stelle eine Burg erbaut worden war. Wir sind dann weiter nach Burnham Thorpe gefahren, wo Nelson 1758 geboren wurde. Wir haben zusammen ein Büchlein über Nelson gelesen und so viel über diesen Mann, warum er ein Nationalheld wurde, über seine drei grossen Schlachten, die am Nil, die in Dänemark und die von Traffalgar, gelernt und natürlich auch allgemein über sein Zeitalter. Wir schauten uns den Ort an, wo sein Geburtsthaus bis 1803 stand, die Kirche in der er getauft worden war und den Pub wo er seine Abschiedsparty gab. In der Kirche fanden wir ebenfalls viele Infos über ihn sowie ein Faltblättchen „der Nelson Weg“, eine Wanderung durch Burnharm Thorpe, ebenfalls mit vielen Infos.

River Burn: Nelson lived by the River Burn and at one point of his life even took water from the river to fill up his pond.
Nelson lebte beim Fluss Burn, hier auf dem Bild, und hat - kleine Anekdote - sogar Wasser aus dem Fluss geschoepft, um seinen Fischteich zu fuellen.
